MEET HOCl
Powerful science. Surprisingly simple.
Hypochlorous acid, or HOCl, might sound complicated, but it’s actually something your body already knows.
HOCl is a naturally occurring molecule produced by certain white blood cells as part of your body’s innate immune response. It helps your body defend itself against unwanted microorganisms.
Pretty amazing, right?
Through a process called electrolysis, we can create HOCl outside the body using water, salt, and electricity. The result is an incredibly versatile solution that has become increasingly popular in homes, skincare, wound care, healthcare settings, and more.
HOW DOES HOCl WORK?
Think of HOCl as one of the tools your immune system uses to protect you.
When certain white blood cells encounter unwanted microorganisms, they can produce hypochlorous acid as part of the body’s natural defense response.
Scientists have studied HOCl for its antimicrobial properties and its ability to interact with a broad range of microorganisms. Unlike many traditional antiseptic ingredients, appropriately formulated HOCl solutions have also been studied for their compatibility with skin and tissue.
That combination is part of what makes HOCl so unique.
WAIT... IS HOCl BLEACH?
No. Hypochlorous acid is not the same thing as household bleach.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about HOCl.
Household bleach typically contains sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) at a much higher concentration and alkaline pH. Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a different chemical species and can be formulated at much lower concentrations.
So while the names may sound similar, you should not think of a properly formulated HOCl solution as a bottle of household bleach.
WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT HOCl?
Because HOCl has an unusual combination of antimicrobial activity + versatility + gentleness when appropriately formulated.
Researchers have investigated HOCl in areas including:
Skin & wound care
HOCl solutions have been studied as wound-cleansing agents and for their antimicrobial properties in wound management.
Dermatology
Research has explored topical HOCl in connection with skin cleansing and a variety of dermatologic applications.
Food & produce
HOCl also has applications within food safety. Certain HOCl preparations have been authorized for specific food-contact uses, including applications involving fresh fruits and vegetables.
And that’s only part of the story.
ONE INGREDIENT. SO MANY POSSIBILITIES.
One of the reasons we fell in love with HOCl is its versatility.
Depending on how a particular product is formulated and labeled, HOCl can be used in products designed for things like:
♡ Everyday skin cleansing
♡ Minor skin and wound cleansing
♡ Hands
♡ Toys and pacifiers
♡ Household surfaces
♡ Baby and family essentials
♡ Fruits and vegetables
♡ Beauty and skincare routines
Important: Not every HOCl product is interchangeable. Concentration, pH, purity, stability, packaging, and the product’s intended use all matter. Always follow the directions on the specific product you’re using.
BUT IS SOMETHING THIS GENTLE ACTUALLY POWERFUL?
That’s what makes HOCl so fascinating.
Published research has documented HOCl’s antimicrobial activity, while clinical literature has also investigated appropriately formulated HOCl solutions for use on skin and wounds.
A 2020 review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology described stabilized topical HOCl as having antimicrobial and antibiofilm properties and discussed its use in wound management.
A 2017 expert review of the scientific evidence described advanced HOCl solutions as viable wound-cleansing agents and discussed their antimicrobial activity and safety profile.
And a broad 2025 scientific review examined clinical research involving HOCl across dermatology, surgery, dentistry, ophthalmology, rhinology, and other specialties.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND SOMETHING SO SIMPLE
We believe families deserve to understand what’s inside the products they bring into their homes.
HOCl isn't a trendy ingredient we invented. It's a molecule scientists have studied for decades, and it's part of the body's own innate immune chemistry.
For Lulifi, that science opened the door to something we had been searching for as parents:
Simple formulas. Thoughtful ingredients. Powerful possibilities.
Because caring deeply about what you use around your family shouldn’t mean compromising on performance.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HOCl.
Once you learn about it, you’ll wonder how you lived without it.
